INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background of the study
Maize breeders have
done a series of processes in maize breeding in search for better quality
maize. Initial breeding efforts at International Maize and Wheat Improvement
Center (CIMMYT), focused on conversion of a range of sub tropical and tropical
lowland adopted, normal endosperm populations to opaque-2 (o2) a versions
through a backcross- recurrent selection procedure with a focus of accumulating
the hard endosperm phenotype, maintaining protein quality and increasing yield
and resistance to ear rot.
Adoption of
technology is an important factor for economic development especially in
developing countries. In order to attract more investment in agricultural
research, there is a need for researchers to produce evidence that research and
technology dissemination investments have been competitive compared to other
alternatives (Anandajayasekeram, et al., 1996). A study on adoption of improved
technology is important because it will generate key indicators for measuring
farm level impact so as to improve farming practices.
